Remote pot raid yields 15,000 plants

More than 15,000 young marijuana plants were uprooted Monday on the northern slope of Sherwood Peak in northwestern Mendocino County.

Local sheriff’s deputies and agents from the federal Drug Enforcement Agency arrested Felicianao Soto, a 46-year-old resident of Mexico, at a campsite near one of two commercial pot gardens.

Sheriff Lt. Rusty Noe said Soto told investigators that two other suspects who were with him fled into the surrounding timberland. The remote site is owned by Hawthorne Campbell Co. of Fort Bragg.

Noe said thousands of tender green pot plants measuring 2-6 inches tall were found Monday after agents from the county’s marijuana eradication team and the DEA hiked into the area. Spring is typically the start of planting season for outdoor marijuana gardens.

The plantation-style operation was spotted during an aerial overflight last week by the county unit, Noe said.
